Leviathan

nazi_rallyThe Leviathan is found in Job 41, Psalm 74 and 104, and Isaiah 27. The image is that of a sea monster or sea dragon which is serpent like. Arguably the beast in Revelation 13 that comes out of the sea is also this same Leviathan.

Many have speculated whether this Leviathan was a physical creature. But the Bible clearly does not refer to Leviathan merely as a physical creature but also points to its spiritual meaning. The Bible often gives certain animals spiritual meanings. For example the Holy Spirit is represented by a dove, the Messiah by a lamb, Satan by a snake or a dragon, unclean spirits by birds etc. Leviathan is clearly an evil spirit with snake like qualities which is stealth and cunning.

He is a spirit that cannot be defeated or tamed by man alone(Job 41:9). He is immersed in the midst of mankind, stirring up trouble creating turmoil and chaos (Job 41:31/32). He uses his tongue (Job 41:1) on the pride of men (Job 41:34), leading them into violence (fire) by high sounding thoughts and ideas (Job 41:34).

If we look at the violent history of man, we find it is lofty thoughts and aspirations, sometimes religous, social (communism), racial (Nazism, Rwandan Genocide), together with men’s pride that often cause men to commit atrocities on a grand scale. So we find that all through human history, Leviathan have been active.

But there is a day when the Lord will punish this Leviathan (Isa 27:1).  In that day the Lord will use His sword (His word), to slay this monster (Isa 27:1). He will use His people to fill the world with good fruit.

Hab 2:14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.

Perhaps we are not living in that day, the day the Lord will finally destroy Leviathan. But the spirit of Leviathan like the spirit of antichrist is already active and we are to battle these spirits in our own lifetimes as the Lord leads. I think the spirit of Leviathan is most manifested in anti-semitic, anti-Israel and anti Christian sentiments. This is true in the times of the Roman Empire, then in Nazi Germany, through the Communist movement, and now in the radical Islamic resurgence. We also find that as the western nations loses their belief in Christ, they will also become more anti-semitic and anti-Christian and will be easily swayed by the works of Leviathan.

We already see in Europe and in the United Nations the spirit of Leviathan working. We cannot battle this just by human methods like education, discussion or debate. This is spiritual warfare and we must fight with spiritual weapons and spiritual armour. We need to know how to use God’s word and how to pray and also, casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Cor 10:5).

Standing on God’s side

I am not anti USA, nor am I pro USA. But it seems a large part of the people of USA and their leaders are bent on persuing a rebellious path against the Almighty God. Not only are they taking an unholy stand promoting abortion, desecrating the institution of marriage, promoting LGBT lifestyles, but they seek to impose their abominations upon the whole world.

Truly this is Romans chapter 1 being fulfilled.

In verse 32 who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

Perhaps the recent election in the USA have given them a temporary reprieve. But looking at the adverse reaction of so many, I think that many have chosen godlessness and wickedness over what is good.

Perhaps like Judah during the reign of King Josiah, there was a temporary awakening. There was much activity to right the previous wrongs but there was no deep repentance of the nation. So within a short time after the reign of Josiah, Judah went back to their old wicked ways. The result was inevitable. God allowed Judah to be destroyed and for the people to be exiled to Babylon.

Are all the people of Judah wicked during those times? Of course not. There was Daniel and his three friends who stood firm in the face of the pressure from the king of Babylon. And there was the prophet Jeremiah and Ezekiel who prophesied during the period of the exile. But the good and the wicked will have to suffer the collective punishment of the nation.

I don’t write this in a gloating manner. In fact, I have fond memories of the USA. I remember how you sacrifice your sons for the freedom of Europe and the salvation of the Jews. I remember again how you sacrifice your sons in Korea and Vietnam to stop the evil of communism. I remember fondly your missionaries whom you send throughout the world to preach and to show the love of Jesus Christ. But this continued rebellion against the Lord cannot end well.

Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, O house of Israel?’ Ezekiel 5:11

End time churches

The scripture is from Matthew chapter 25. It is the parable of the ten virgins. Matthew 24 is about the Lord’s prophecies regarding the end times. To bring this lesson home to the disciples and the churches He told them this parable of the ten virgins.

The ten virgins represent all the churches who are waiting for the return of the Lord. They are virgins because the Lord has cleanse them. They all have the lamp of testimony.

But they all fell asleep. They got tired of waiting for the Lord. Now they are more interested in their earthly affairs. Perhaps it is the size of their church, or the state of their finances or even their status and political clout. Whatever it is, they are not truly waiting for their Lord’s coming.

But amongst the ten there are five with vessels of oil. These have people (vessels) in the church who are full of the Spirit. When the time comes that the Lord’s coming is imminent and obvious, these churches will be ready to receive Him.

This ties in with the letter to the seven churches in Revelation. It is a call to overcome. To remain in the church that God has called you and to overcome amidst the dark and trying circumstance.

Behold, the bridegroom cometh. Matthew 25:6

Evil is strong but God is stronger

If there is one thing that I have learnt from the recent presidential election in the USA and the reactions thereafter, it is that evil and wickedness is strong in the world.

First, let me define what I see as the greatest evil; it is godlessness. And then let me list the manifestions of this godlessness in the world:

1. In the massive use of abortion as birth control.

2. In the widespread adoption of LGBTQ lifestyle as a legitimate alternative to holy matrimony.

3. In the use of lies, deceit and slander as legitimate weapons to further a cause.

4. In the use of extreme violence and cruelty to establish an idolatorous and wicked ideology and kingdom.

5. In the delegitimising of the land of Israel to the Jews which God has given to them forever.

In the rise of the movement that culminates in President Trump, I see a push back against all these manifestations of godlessness and evil. But I also see the gates of hell unleashed against this movement. Surely the Evil one has gathered his forces against the Trump election in an unprecedented scale. Yet he was not able to prevail against God’s movement.

Now I see a regrouping of the forces of evil. They are redoubling their effort to put a stop to this movement of God. It is surely our role to continue in prayer to see God’s will be done.

Time for prayer

When the prophet Daniel realised that the time of exile was almost over, he set himself to fast and pray. This praying for what is already ordained in heaven is what we must do today. Today we see the time of the Lord’s return almost here. It is ordained in heaven and revealed in prophecies. It is time for us to pray for His will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Fulfilling all righteousness

On Tuesday bible study, we had a lively discussion on the meaning and significance of the baptism of Jesus by John. I find myself still mulling over this and would like to further this discussion.

Firstly, the baptism of John is clearly a baptism of repentance from sins. John preached the coming of the kingdom of heaven and the coming of the King. Baptism is an acknowledgment of sin and repentance from sin, thereby making oneself ready for the coming kingdom and the coming king.

It is no wonder that John, initially refuse to baptize Jesus. It goes against his own understanding of his ministry and the significance of his baptism. Perhaps John did not understand fully the significance of Jesus’ ministry on earth – that the Messiah is destined for the cross. And perhaps that is the reason why he finds it hard to understand why the Lord would leave him in prison and even let him face his eventual fate of being beheaded by Herod.

The Lord’s answer to John’s reluctance to baptize Him is:

15 “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”

So the significance of this baptism is no small thing. Fulfilling all righteousness means setting right all that was previously wrong, for since the beginning of sin from Adam, the whole creation has been subjected to sin and death.

Romans 8:3 For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man,

So, the Law was unable to fulfill God’s righteousness in the world because men has become inherently sinful. But by the coming and ministry of Jesus Christ, God is restoring the world to righteousness.

So in this baptism, we see the complete identification of the Son of God with sinful man. He that is without sin was baptised like sinful man, that He may be the sin offering.

If Christ’s baptism testifies of His complete identification with man, our baptism speaks of our complete identification with Christ, being buried in Him and being raised in Him.

Rom 6:4 We were buried therefore with him through baptism unto death:

We should not discount the spiritual reality of testimony whether in word or deed. We often see our baptism or breaking bread as just symbolism, and take it lightly. But we see from Christ’s baptism that it was hugely significant. Christ Himself said that His baptism fulfilled all righteousness. Then the Holy Spirit anointed Him, the heaven open and the Father spoke. And it was the start of His public ministry.

My thoughts turn to our own activities like baptism, breaking bread, prayer etc. They are all our actions or activities that should be our spiritual testimonies. We should do them with the right heart and not go beyond the faith God has given us. But equally important is that if we have the faith we should be doing these activities that testify of our faith, thereby also fulfilling righteousness in our actions.
